Battery vent question

So I bought the Exide Sprinter Max battery at Home Depot today. I noticed that it has a vent elbow coming out the side of the battery near the negative post. I can rotate it 360 degrees. My Tahoe is new to me but I’m not the original owner. Is there supposed to be some sort of factory vent tube that this elbow attaches to that’s missing or is it just there to vent into open air? You can connect a hose to the vent line for just in case purposes, but as your battery is inside the engine compartment, exposed to outside air, it isn't necessary to have a vent tube. The vent on the battery is a safety vent to allow dangerous gases to vent if the battery goes into a death spiral. It is plugged normally and only releases if pressures rise too much inside the battery.

Only time i have ever seen that thing hooked up is if the battery is inside like under the backseat, or a motorcycle where you route it as to not spill acid on your legs.

Thanks justfishing. I’ve never even seen one on a battery that I can remember. Didn’t know if these trucks had a factory hose or something that I was missing.

You could put some clear tubing from the vent nipple down to under the vehicle.

If the battery is a sealed maintenance free then the vent tube is there in case the battery vents. If the tube is not a maintenance free then it is odd that is has a vent elbow on the battery. NON Maintenance Free batteries ALWAYS produce Hydrogen during charging of the battery. Hydrogen is explosive and will do so. Underneath the hood is open air.
