Brake upgrade comparisons/suggestions

I’m a new member and spent the better part of the last 24 hours reading many posts on this forum. I have a 2017 Yukon Xl Denali 6.2 with 51k miles and located in New Jersey. I had a 21ft travel trailer and just upgraded to a 33ft 6,200lb. From what I’ve gathered on the site I should definitely be flipping the pill before my maiden trip. But at 50k my brakes are due for a change and I intend on traveling west into the mountains in the coming years and am considering upgrading the brake system.

It appears many have recommended the brembos, wilwoods, and the prostops. Cost is a consideration for me, but not to jeopardize braking with my family in the truck.

Brembo or Wilwood don’t make rear sets? I am considering going brembo in the front and then a pro stop caliper in the back to match the red, but with solid rotors and alternative pads due to some reviews on here about the prostop pads.

Does anyone have any other suggestions or recommendations?

Great looking setup!

I tow a 7000 lb (loaded up for camping) camper with a 2012 XL Denali. Last year we made a trip out west to Yellowstone and the Tetons from Virginia, and we also pull over the Blue Ridge mountains often. I've never had any problems getting slowed down or stopped with the factory brakes on mine in any conditions, including panic stops. Still have the original pads on both axles at 130K. The key, I believe, is getting the trailer brake controller set up right.

Wilwood does make the rear set for your ride.

I just ordered the full set of Power Stop Z36 brakes for around $1k with the red calipers. I would love the bigger Brembo's or Wilwoods but just can't justify the $4k+ price and a lot of great reviews about the Z36 kit.

So I’ve travelled about 500 miles with it this weekend so far with the original factory pads and I haven’t had any issues so far, between getting the brake controller right and leveraging the downshifting. Granted it’s on on I-95 on the fairly flat east coast but I’m pleased so far. Thank you for responding, it gave me the confidence to try out the oem set up

The 4K is really tough to swallow, I would do it if it were really warranted but based on my experience so far with the OEM set up, and the reviews on the z36… is there a particular post you we’re referencing with the reviews??

Glad to hear it went well for you. One thing I forgot to mention is that the engine braking is very effective with tow/haul mode enabled, and especially using manual mode to limit the gear range. We have some steep downgrades in the Shenandoah area and I've never had to worry about overheating the brakes.

Nope, no particular post. Just reading a lot of general reviews and brake threads.

There are a few posts around with part numbers to go with the PPV 6 piston calipers and larger rotors, OEM. I think the cost is around $1400.

In my opinion, there is not much need to buy red stock calipers, you can paint yours red cheap enough with high temp paint. There is no difference in what you already have and when you buy the pad kits, it comes with pin lube and boots, so in essence, other than piston seals which rarely go bad, you have new functioning calipers.
