I was towing my boat yesterday to and from the lake and it was really hard to brake and at one point I smelled my brakes burning.

When I originally picked up the boat a month back there is a slight possibility I drove it with the parking brake engaged. Is the parking brake part of the rear drums? If it is I am sure that was the issue when I had it worked on the guy said my front brakes have a lot of use left.

Thanks

Park brake doesn't keep vehicle in place in drive.

When you say it's in the drum is it separate parts to replace? I want to order new rear brakes and get this finished up. Still waiting on my steering gearbox to get in. Have yet to find the Allen adjustment for it to attempt to tighten it.

The brake should keep the car stationary when the car is in gear.

unknown at this time.
the parking brake is the same parts almost. It just uses a mechanical means to spread brake shoe as opposed to hydraulics. If they can't hold the vehicle while in gear they are really out of adjustment or broken.

I meant I'm aware of the brakes supposed to hold it in place. This confirms what I said. I probably destroyed the drum. Do I just new to order drums?

They may just be out of adjustment, you may have burned off part of the shoe surface while not destroying them. I have done that before under a load without even thinking and just adjusted them later. If you do plan or need to then you can either order new drums or check those and see if they can be turned, that is less expensive. That and new parking brake shoes.

Not to thread jack but in other cars I've had with drum brakes they've been auto adjusting by going in reverse and hitting the brakes hard a few times
