California Tint Laws?

I'll be heading to Cali here in May and would like to know what the tint laws are? Not getting much info from google other than 88% light let through. I have Virginia Tags on my Denali. Looking to get 20% all the way around. Any info is greatly appreciated.

As long as you have out of state tags I don't believe they can ticket you for it.

Roll your windows down when you see a cop I've heard people coming from Arizona/Nevada and being told to turn around for there tint. Cops down there especially CHP are real jerks about that kinda stuff!

As far as I know they cannot legally ask you to do that due to each state having different laws regarding tint.

Ohh yeah they defintitley can't but that's just what I heard could be a rumor could be true it's 50/50

well right now I have the stock tint in back and the front windows are clear. Need some tint on there.

Hey man, I live in Cali. Tint laws are as follow (from many personal experiances and a lot of time spent in court)

1.) All rear windows may be tinted as dark as you want NO LIMIT
2.) front windows (driver pasanger) NO TINT AT ALL. NONE. 100% clear windows is the only thing that legal. CHP are the biggest A**holes about tints. I have had limo and worked my way down after every ticket. 20% seems to cause me the least amount of issues (knock on wood)
3.) Windshield- NO TINT AT ALL! only allowed to have visor strio to ASV line.
4.) Tail light tints/ headlights etc. - SMOKING ANY LIGHTS no matter how dark or light is illegal


ALL IN ALL CALI sucks and is very harsh when it comes to tinted windows. Especially for a place that get pretty hot during summer! But nothing we can do about it!

^^ yep. just had to de tint my fronts. Got pulled over twice, 1st was warning, 2nd ticket.

Another reason why I will never have my cars registered in California! CHP hates me as I roll by with my tint job

thanks for the heads up. Think I will just go with 20% in the back and go with 35% on the driver/passenger. Like to get the front strip too, sucks that they dont put a tint of some sort on the front. Been hearing alot of horror stories about cali. this 3 year tour is going to suck.
