So the Cats are plugged on my Tahoe. I need to replace them but im having trouble trying to figure out what cats to get.

When i looked under the hood of my tahoe it says that this vehicle meets both Federal and California Emissions. I dont live in California or in an area that has adopted the CARB standards. So can i replace my cats with 49 state legal ones?

The cost difference is huge between the two. I found an entire direct fit catalytic converter kit for around 300, but the california ones are around 900 or more.

Do you guys know if there would be any problems with puting in the 49 state legal ones? will it throw codes? are there any legal issues with this that i should know about?

Thanks

If your not in a emmisions testing state, you can pull them out, but will require a tune..

Realize you will notice a new smell... From your exhaust... some like it some do not...

If It was me, I would pullem and retune...

Yeah i thought about that, but the problem is that no one in my town will rimp by cats out without replacing them with new ones, and i dont have the ability to weld them on myself.

I just want to replace the cats, because i would like to see the Tahoe in not to long and get a vehicle with a lot less miles.

you can get the cali's for less then $600 I would suggest that you do those becuase although you are not in cali your vehicle was based on emmsion standards of cali. A smog test based on your vin may require you to have California converters no matter where you are at if the vin is what they base you emmisions limits at. Keep in mind I still do not know the chemical break down between the different kinds but Magnaflows are the way to go. Call and talk to them.

This is a direct fit for a 2003 tahoe with a 4.8l

I would assume those work with the 5.3L also?

I have been searching the internet for hours and Im having a really hard time finding answers.

I keep reading that all newer vehicles meet california emissions requirements. But not all the cats i find online do. Almost all of all the cats i find online say they are only 49 state legal, and only a small percentage of them say legal in california. So im confused. Some Autoparts places only sell 49 state legal cats.

im just trying to replace my cats at cheap as possible so i can get rid of the Check engine light and restore power to my tahoe. I plan on selling it soon ayway for a vehicle with lower miles

You will have to call and ask them. they did not have a5.3l listed. Get their part number and do a Google search for best price. websites may hide the the cali option if the site notices you are not in cali based on browser cookies or ip adress. Call magna for a part number and just search that number online. And when you sell it add some cost for it as a performance upgrade if you want.

And it will be legal for the next owner if they move it to California.

Just to add something to the talking here, I called magnaflow for my vehicle. Even though it is a federal non-california vehicle I would still have to have a cali converter since it is registered in california.
