I'm thinking about buying a carbon fiber kit and overlaying the wood trim in the 'hoe. I'm not sure how I would get it smooth though as I'd be applying the resin by brush. Anyone know if it's sandable? I realize it will have to be thin on the edges to still snap into place.

Anyone done this before? I used to do some work with fiberglass, so I'm hoping I can make this look pretty decent.

I am not sure that'll work well. Even the thin CF cloth is pretty thick, and the panels fit in fairly tightly. ALL of your overlain panels would stick up from the surrounding surfaces, and look 'stuck on'.

You're probably better off using some good-quality CF vinyl:

If you are going to use CF cloth, you'll probably want to pull the existing panels off, make molds and cast new panels, but that's just me.

I've never seen the vinyl in person, is it like all the fake CF phone cases? I've had a CF hood before, so I'm afraid I'll hate the vinyl.

I dunno. Like you, I haven't seen it in person. Ask Ponchonutty. It seemed to look pretty good to me. So good, in fact that I'm seriously tempted to do this myself on our PPV.

That's a link to when I did mine with vinyl. It's not for the faint of heart though. Takes a lot of patients. I think I may clear over the vinyl with regular automotive clear to finish it off. When looking at it, it looks like the real thing until you feel it. You can feel the texture of the vinyl. Not one person that has seen it in person felt it was fake lol

Do you have a link to the actual product you used?

When using real carbon fiber you can sand the resin smooth and then either polish it or apply clear over it. There's a few videos on YouTube on how to do carbon fiber overlays. Also check out Tony's build, he has his done in carbon fiber and the fit seems fine.

If you do the carbon fiber vinyl, it would be good if you can build up a clear over it so it's smooth that would give it more depth and look more realistic. I think it would look better.
