I have a metal on metal clanging noise underneath ...that sounds like it's inside the exhaust....it doesn't speed up when I accelerate......it's a really annoying , random sound.....I immediately thought it was an exhaust hanger or skid plate or something like that......any ideas ?

Heat shield, broken catalyst in the converter... So many possibilities.

My random clanging was the heat shield around the spare tire. The mounting tab broke.

There's a heat shield on top of the muffler, attached to the muffler. That's what was making noise on mine

Do you hear it at idle, parked? If so, climb underneath and get in the general area of the sound and look around. I chased a sound down to one of cats a while back.
