posting this because this is my first tahoe, someone may have an easy solution. but ill likely crawl under the truck tomorrow.
I had a clunking noise, somewhere in the back, sounds like under the passenger side. i found that the rubber exhaust isolater was broke, freplaced expecting that to be the fix.
but ive still got a clunk, like something is loose. seems more so at slow speeds. on the highway i dont hear anything.
i reached under, dont feel like the spare is loose. shocks seem ok, the plastic top sections have a little play but i dont think thats it.
bushings? anything else i can look for when under there?

Any number of things. First thing to mind is shocks and bushings. Check driveshaft u-joints. Any other exhaust mounts. spring attachments and bushings. Is there any one thing you can do to always duplicate the noise when you drive it?

Are you sure from the back? Sounds like sway bar bushings and end links but you could have a rear sway bar under there at the rear, also. I would still lean toward the shocks with that description. Or spring at axle mounts and bushings.

Anyone who climbs under vehicles on the ground should have a set of insulated coveralls that they don't care about getting dirty and a warm stocking hat.

In cold weather, you bet. You will do a better job of checking things out under there if you aren't freezing your a$$ off.

so i climbed around underneath ( without coveralls, there at my folks house)
I couldnt find anything loose. i spent a half hour. What i did find , it looks like the coil for the rear passenger side is out of center on the bottom
im wondering if maybe the rubber that sits in the bottom is allowing some travel.
there is a TSB # 06030007 for a noise similiar to this. Ill call the dealer this morning to see if my ride is covered by it.

I have a 2001 Tahoe and I had a clunking noise in the rear end that drove me nuts because I couldn't figure it out. Would hear it slow speeds sometimes when turning and going over bumps. I finally figured mine out. It ended up being the tracking bar in the rear (also known as panhard bar). I replaced the tracking bar and its gone. Just a thought for you to check out.
