I can turn a wrench, but I'm fairly weak when it comes to audio...so I was hoping for some help. I've been following the threads and reading a bit, so I figured it was my time for one big post.

I'd like to upgrade the speakers all around - fronts + rears + subs

Rears - it seemed like folks liked the Alpine 6x9 Type R - any other preferences?
Fronts - I'd like to go component - recommendations? (do I need to do any cutting?)

Here is what I was thinking for the subs and was going the 10" route:

Recommendations on shallow subs? <<it seems like a few folks recommend CVTs>>

I have a 1000W amp, never been used (don't have it with me, no idea on name), but I believe it's a 2 channel.

I don't know if it's possible, but I'd really like to stay with the stock head unit...a big reason is so my car doesn't get broken into. With that in mind, I would like to be able to tune the system (speakers + sub independently) more then the simple "bass" and "treble" on the stock unit.

Can i add a small equalizer after the stock unit? If so, is there a version that can tune the speakers independent of the subs, but can also tune the subs?

I would like to build a system that has a sharp, clear sound with a bit of kick...doesn't need to shake the panels off the truck.

I know it's a lot of questions, but I appreciate any input.

I think you'll be pleased with the alpine 6x9s, and some decent components that I know of are kicker, rockford fosgate, alpine, and Im sure others will throw up some more options for those. For the fronts, you should just have to drill new holes for the speakers, and maybe cutting a hole where ever you chose to put your tweeter. And what about the rear doors?? or do you have a 2 door?

As for the subs, you need to figure out what your amps stable at before you go and buy some subs. Figure out what ohm its stable at and how much power it gives out then choose some subs. And I've never peronally dealt with shallow mounts so idk what to tell you is good or not.

You can keep your stock headunit, you just need to buy this thing that splices into a couple wires and has a RCA input on it. Then you can adjust it with your bass knob on your headunit.

Never done anything with equalizers either, so I cant tell you anything about those either lol.

Hope I answered a few of your questions, and good luck with your build man! :)

Thanks Mav!

I completly forgot about the rear doors when I first wrote this up...but I believe there are just circular mids there...but I haven't taken off the doors so i'm not sure.

Anyone have experience with equalizers or setting this up from the head unit?

depends on the HU you get...some have great tuning abilities, some are very basic.

you might make fun of me for this...but I was hoping to keep the stock head unit :)

I like the stock look and it lessens the chance of a window being smashed. I was hoping to do all the tuning with a seperate equalizer that I can hide somewhere.

if you get a good quality amp, you can do some mods to it. Problems are ( like me for now) you have to use an LOC,along with the stock HU, which effects output and overall sound.
But if you want stock HU, get an LOC and a 5 channel amp, or a 4 channel for front and a mono amp for rear.(sub)

What is an LOC? Other then tuning at the amp, is there another way to do it to reduce sound degredation?

Also, why would the sound degrade if I tuned it at the amp?

LOC= line output converter. it takes the amplified signal and drops it down back to a condition that another amp can amplify it. doing this greatly reduces your sound quality because you can only amplify a signal so much before it degrades.

the short answer is yes, however getting some one to wire up preamp outs from a head unit will be VERY pricey.
