About a month ago I posted about a pretty serious coolant leak that was leaking rapidly on my 2003 GMC YUKON XL...

So I'm now 99% sure that the leak is from the water pump. I removed the water pump tonight but don't know what to do next. I dont want to buy a new one if the original water pump is fine. I inspected it and didnt see any cracks or major issues.

Could the gasket have failed? Could the water pump have just come loose? Should I just clean everything up, buy a new gasket and just put it back on? Or is this just a waste of time?

Also I broke this T-connector what is it called? THE LINK IS BELOW VVVVVV

Thanks everyone!

its not all too rare to come across water pumps with bad pressings (some of the nipples are press fitted in when manufactured), though you do see it more on the larger inlet and outlets... i've even seen trucks with a puddle of coolant around an inlet just sitting in the lot (before the truck was even sold!) - again, bad pressing. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, the "fix" is to simply replace the unit entirely. Luckily, they are not all too expensive, readily available, and not too difficult of a job...

also, not sure what happened, but the linked picture is not of a "T" (at least i'm not seeing it...???)

this "bad press fitting" issue isnt exactly "visible" either... you wont notice a gap or loose fitment... if that makes sense. You just see the coolant passing/puddling etc

Just hit a orileys pr autoparts store.
Those plastic parts commonly break. They will have replacement.
If not hit a dealership. You will definatly get it there.

The hoses to the y ( or t) connector look kinda old. Maybe time to replace hoses too. You may not be able to tell bearing failure just by looking at it. Replace pump & tstat

Thanks for the advice! Will buy new one! Also, I wasnt able to remove the fan when I took the water pump off. I kept turning the bolt behind the fan but it never came undone. I went to autozone and they gave me a tool but all it was, was a big wrench? Any tips on how to get the fan off?

Thanks

The pump has an internal seal and bearing. On the bearing side (dry) there is a weep hole. If the coolant (wet side) gets passed the seal, it contaminates the bearings. If there was no weep hole you'd never know this happened until you had a castrophic bearing failure which would leave you stranded. The weep hole allows you to slowly lose coolant over time allowing you to see the problem before the failure that leaves you stranded. Look for signs of staining around the bottom of the pump, it usually isnt hard to track down once you know where to look.

yes thats it i remembered when i replaced my water pump like 3 years ago on my tahoe there was a specific reason why you had to replace the whole pump and not just the gaskets i just couldnt remember why

okay heres how you get the fan off go get a big adjustable wrench if you have
one like a big one and then adjust it and put down on that bolt that holds the fan clutch on and put so that adjustable wrench is standing straight up
then take the heaviest hammer you have i used a small sledge hammer
and give the end of that wrench a good wack and you should break that nut loose in one wack
