Hello all, long time lurker, first time poster. Many thanks to all in this forum who make it what it is, it would be difficult for me to explain how much info I've gained from reading your posts. Thought it was time to share my experience on a much discussed issue.

I have a 2005 Yukon SLT.

I had my cruise control go out which appeared to coincide with a non functioning third brake light. After reading the many posts on this issue, I checked for voltage back there at the third brake light (12V was present thus light was bad), so I ordered a new third brake light. New brake light came in the mail... no longer had 12Vs at the connector when I re-checked. I went into the brake light switch, the third contact was fried. I replaced it. Third brake light now functions, still no cruise control. I checked my fuses again (first thing I checked when I started diagnosing the problem), the CRUISE (located in the fuse box inside the door jam) fuse was fried. Replaced it, still no cruise.

I used some of the other posts to do more diagnosing. Specifically checking for voltage inside the engine bay at the Throttle Actuator Control while using different portions of the multi-function switch (turn signal stalk). No voltage at all at the TAC. (PM me if you have any questions on this, I can direct you to the post I used. Also, this was news to me but AutoZone online has free wiring diagrams for our trucks, all you have to do is become a 'member' which is free. Extremely good resource).

Since there was no voltage at the engine bay, and there was in fact voltage at the CRUISE and other cruise related fuses, I determined the problem had to be in between (i.e. the multi function switch.. the Autozone diagram made this clear). I took apart the dash and there was the wiring harness from the stalk specific to the cruise functions.. disconnected. Problem solved! I couldn't believe it as this part does not rotate with the steering wheel and I had never been in there to have possibly left it loose.

Long post, but I hope it helps some of you. This problem has been nagging me for weeks. As you can tell, I had multiple problems which complicated the diagnosis. Get in there and check your multi-function switch if fuses and brake switch don't resolve the problem. You can use a multi-meter to determine if the switch is doing its job related to cruise control also. I have a spare multi-function switch I got from the junk yard if anyone wants it... I'd be willing to let it go for what I paid for it plus postage (around $20).

Let me know if you have any questions.

Cheers from North Carolina.
