04 Yukon Denali 204k miles, the main dash instrument cluster has lost the backlight illumination. Researched bulbs, bought them, took out the cluster and its all internal, no bulbs in sockets. Seems a bit more involved to repair than I want to do. So, i think I want to get a new cluster and just plug it in. Question is about the mileage and vehicle data, is it stored in the cluster or is the cluster just a display for the info from another source?

Mileage is stored in the cluster. You could always send yours out for a rebuild/upgrade. If this is your dd, you don't need your cluster to be able to still drive it. Plenty of companies out there that rebuilds them.
