Well i decided to take the molding off and ran into some problems. Most of it went ok. The drivers door had some aftermarket tape on it that was almost impossible to get off. It was realy soft. After i was done i noticed an outline where the molding was. Its everywhere but the drivers door. It turns out the truck was painted (probably replaced the drivers door) and the molding was taped over. You can totally feel the line. I'm thinking that i should just sand down the bottom of the truck and just touch it up and blend it. But there is no decal in the glovebox so i have no idea what the paint code is. Its a 99 2 door and i think its called Pewter but i'm not shure. Will this be my best bet or does anyone else have an option?

I would agree that is your best option. Body shops have computerized equipment that can come up with an exact matching code for your paint. I'm not sure what they'd charge you to get this info for you but may be worth a shot to take your rig up there and see if they'll let you know what paint code is on it. You might also get an estimate of what they'd charge just to do the blending. It couldn't be that big of a job for a shop to do I wouldn't think....

If it is Pewter, the code is WA-382E.

I'm sure the paint has faded over the last 12 years, though, right? Would it be hard to blend it with the original color next to what the color actually is now with the sun fade?

have you tried to use a clay bar to rub out the "bump"??

When I debadged, I had a defined outline of all the logos that did not go away untill I detailed my truck (clay bar, buff, polish, and wax)... after that, everything was perfecto!

you have pictureS?

oh, and your other option is to put the moulding back on.

considered painting the whole bottom half?? Just a thought, painters hate to blend.....maybe not much more to paint lower portion.

Had the same issue on my truck. I just decided to put new molding back on until I have enough money for a real deal paint job.

New molding looks a hell of a lot better than the old faded, pitted, rusted crap that was on there. It's not ideal but it will work for now.

If you do decide to two-tone your truck, I would be curious to hear how much a shop would charge to just paint the rockers (bottom up to the style line/indention). Keep us posted.

i had the same issue.....i painted the molding and put it back on...from far away you couldnt tell i had molding. it never chipped or anything...get a good painter and it will look fine.

fyi- my buddy is a painter and claims pewter is the worst color to blend. says it fades more than most. two tone isnt a bad idea

Ok you guys are right. Matching the color is going to be near impossible. So what i did was wet sand the problem areas with 400 grit. Then i went over the lower panel with 1500 grit. Then i used 3M rubbing compound on a drill with a foam pad and followed up with 3M polishing compound on a waffle pad. After that i waxed it with some Meguires NXT wax. I can tell its still there but you can hardly notice anymore.
