I Don't know if it's been discussed before but I'm interested in knowing the reason for having to use oil with Dexos. What is the difference between the motors in my 2010 as opposed to my 2012 that requires it? I really don't care because my dealer gives you 7 dollar oil changes when you buy a new vehicle. I let them change it every 3000 miles for that price so as not to void the warrant y. Reason I'm curious is because one of my employees had a check engine light come on in his Sonic and the dealer charged him $900 to repair whatever they had to do and blamed him for failure to use oil with Dexos.

The dealer can not force you to use their oil to maintain warranty. you only have to use the recommended quality of oil. so if they say to use a synthetic, you can use a synthetic of your choice as long as it meets the mfrg requirements. If the dealer says you have to use our oil or void the warranty, then they have to supply it free. there is an act called the "Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act" that prevents manufacturers form forcing you to use their products to keep vehicles in warranty.

You are not forced to use their oil. There are oils you can buy now in auto parts stores that have Dexos. Just wondered what the difference in engines is between my 2010 Tahoe and 2012 that makes the 2012 require Dexos oil. They say you can use Dexos in the older truck also but the 2012 must use it.
