I'm strongly considering buying an '07 Tahoe, but two of my three friends who own them have had this mysterious case of disappearing oil. There no wet spots on the engine or garage floor, yet the dipstick (after just 1000 - 1500 miles) shows significant oil loss. Can someone send me a link if this has been discussed before or respond?

Thx.

This is the first I have heard of this condition, and I have not seen a TSB for this.

What year Tahoe do your friends have, which engine, how many miles, what type of oil, do they change their own oil, when/how are they checking oil level, how hard do they drive, and what mods are on the vehicles?

Never heard of anything like that before. I, like Zed 71 spend a lot of time talking to others about our trucks, and thats the first time I have ever heard of that. It really does not make much sense.

I think your friends are pulling your leg. I've had 5.3l engine in 4 vehicles in the last 6 years and have never had an issue with disappearing oil...or any oil usage for that matter - 05 Tahoe, 06 Yukon, 08 Avalanche, 09 Suburban.

SW CT,
Yes there was a TSB issued, but mostly for the Silverados...the pcv valves were the culprit..changed from variable orifice to a fixed orifice. What was happening is the pcv was allowing oil to pass through and into the intake therefore getting burned...this is why there are no signs of a leak.

I have an '07 Suburban LTZ (5.3 engine) with the same issue. 63K miles on it, and oil gets low about every 1,000 miles. Dealer told me they would "look into it". Every now and then, I'll also hear a lifter knock upon start up.

SW CT,
Start up knock has been an issue for the life of the new LS based motors...I would go to your dealer and start the process of watching the oil consumption. They will fill it up and note the mileage then when you see that it is low you go back to them and they document how much they added and the mileage, they should do this a few times to get a good average.
