Do our trucks have variable voltage at the alternator?

I just installed a new (not reman) Remy 145a alternator and it whines like a somabich. I figured maybe it's gonna break in. Nope, wines. Returning it. But one thing I noticed was that randomly my volt meter showed it sink to 12V similar to my 2014 Silverado does when the charging system sees no need to task the alternator. I wasn't aware that my 2002 Tahoe had variable voltage. It doesn't right?

The RVC variable voltage control started in 2005. For those of you who 2005s & 2006s with RVC, there are good ways to get around that BS.
