I'm trying to determine if GM accessory camera 85587357, (https://accessories.gmc.com/product...57?year=2023&make=GMC&model=Yukon&modelId=558) requires factory option ZM1, Enhanced Trailering Technology Package. My salesman is looking into this for me and I had chat sessions with several departments through the GM website plus searched on-line but have not been able to get a definitive answer. Has anyone tried adding this accessory camera to a 2021+ Tahoe / Yukon / Suburban / etc without the ZM1 option?

Background:
I've had a Yukon on order with my dealer for ~9 months without it being picked up by GM. Salesman reached out before Christmas stating they had an allocation and no constraints on the options I wanted if I flipped from a heavily optioned AT4 to a Denali (reserve + towing options), which I did. After a couple weeks of not being picked up, it appears the ZM1 option is back on constraint.

He believes the order will be picked up if we drop the ZM1 option (trailer camera is important to me). He also believes the functionality of the ZM1 option can be replicated with the GM accessory camera and NHT/ZL6 (Max Trailering and ProGrade Trailering) and is trying to confirm. I am also trying to confirm independently.

As frustrating as having a vehicle on order for 9 months with no progress is, it would be even more frustrating to think the Yukon was being built for the next 3 months, only to discover the accessory camera is not compatible.

Thanks,
Jeff

ZM1 gives you two trailer camera input jacks just above the 7-way. Without that option you won’t have those inputs and can’t use this camera.

Thanks Stephen. That aligns with my assumptions as well.

At appears there is no equivalent option on the Sierra. The trailer cameras can be added to a Sierra Denali with no additional options and SLT with the HD surround vision. This is likely where some of the conflicting information is originating.

ZM1 is NOT available right now, 0% constraint, if you want your vehicle anytime soon, you'll have to drop it. It's marked as "Not Available at this time" in the order guide. I had wanted it as well, but it's pretty well been unavailable since early 22.

That's my problem and reason for the question. I've had a Yukon on order with my dealer since April. I'm told ZM1 was available to order just before Christmas but is no longer available to order. My order was entered (submitted to GM) as soon as all options were available (dealer has an allocation) and was expecting it to be accepted either last week before Christmas or first week back. I'm assuming GM took all the ZM1 optioned Yukons they are able to build then closed orders again. My salesman is looking into ways around this limitation such as GM accessories, etc.

Christmas of 22? Yeah, your dealer wasn't giving you legit information. ZM1 has been Not Available to order since Mid August 22, hasn't changed.

I found this article last night and it gives me hope that ZM1 may be able on the Yukon before summer. It also provides a plausible explanation to my salesman thinking ZM1 was available on the Yukon just before Christmas.

GM Authority ZM1 available on Escalade

I also dug around the internet regarding the GM video systems this week. Adding trailer cameras to the in dash display without the factory option will be challenging for a 3rd party. Adding additional factory cameras to the camera mirror appears to be a relatively easy product development and would meet my needs (trailer camera(s) without invisible trailer). The problem I ran into as a DIY solution is switching between cameras cost effectively without designing a circuit board. I'm also not convinced there is a large market for such a device as a clean installation would be quite involved (intercept factory camera feed, new wiring from that point to hitch and dash, etc) and limited to similar cameras (no HDMI, composite, etc. inputs).

The current world of HD video in vehicles is far from mature, there are many competing technologies and relatively little detail in the public domain. It bears very little resemblance to consumer device HD video.

I think at the end of the day if you can't get ZM1, then you're going to be looking to an aftermarket solution like this - https://furrion.com/collections/cameras

Automotive companies have always lived in a vertically integrated system that has little to no regard for up-fitting by the consumer. Some of the heavy duty trucks are getting better at providing up-fitter switches and interfaces to program features after delivery, but the consumer level automotive lives in a world of "Ohh - you want that option? You can pay an extra $1K for that option and by the way it's only available on a trim level that's $10K more than what you were hoping to get."

We live in a world now where nearly everything electrical communicates via a BUS and various levels of software to make it all work together. Even if you could source the plugs, wiring and cameras, you're going to be locked out from integrating it to the infotainment system by differing software versions. I don't know if a dealer would even have access to reprogram the necessary software to make it all work together.

I have a 22 Tahoe Z71 that is loaded. In the infotainment system it shows the ability to add cameras to a trailer however I don't have camera inputs at the rear. I'm wondering if I could get my hands on the parts/cables if this could be plug and play since the head unit indicates they can be added. Not trying to steal your thread but if it could work for me maybe it could work for you as well.
