OK its probably a stupid question, but if the oil pressure sensor (2006 Tahoe w/5.3 eng) goes bad would it affect the way the engine runs? I was driving home and my oil pressure sensor crapped out, or at least I hope thats what happened. For the past week or so the gauge has been erratic, where it normally reads around 40psi its been going 60-80 and sometimes drops to 0 then goes back up. Now it stayed on 0 for about 3 miles on the drive home while I got the constant chiming and "loss of oil pressure" or whatever message on the dash.
After letting it sit for about an hour, when I try to restart it runs really rough like it wont even idle unless i mash on the gas to try to get the rpm's up but it still dies out eventually. I didnt know if there is something with the sensor or whatever trying to keep it from running since it was detecting a lack of oil pressure??

Until you get a pressure gauge in your oil system to see what your oil pressure truly is, stop driving the vehicle and stop assuming it is just a bad sensor.

Once you’ve done that, then you can take the next step of either just replacing the sensor or finding out why you don’t have oil pressure. Either way, replace the sensor once you have the old one out.

finally got around to working on it and found the problem while taking off pieces to access the sending unit. Apparently this Tahoe came with flavored wires that something likes to chew on. There was a spark plug wire on the rear that was chewed through and a wire in the harness on top of the manifold got eaten too. I guess it happened about the same time the oil pressure sender finally crapped out. Thats the second time Ive had wires chewed up on this vehicle. At least I managed to swap out the sending unit a lot quicker than the last one I did.
