Door handle trim pieces

Could anyone tell me if the trim pieces that go around the door handles is part of the door panel itself, or is it a separate piece? Technically I could remove the panel and figure it out, but I wanted to save myself the hassle by asking someone that has already removed the panels.

Could I remove it and install a new bezel around the handles is what I want to know.
