door roller pin trouble

ok, so i got the door off my hoe and i am trying to replace the detent roller pin, but it's not going into the hinge. there's not much room to swing a hammer in there and i'm trying not to eff up the new pin too much. anyone have any tips to get the new pin in? i found an article online, but they make it sound easy- tap it in and reinstall the door- woohoo! all done! not.

What did you do to finally get it in? Might be useful info for someone with the same issue in the future.

actually, i just cleaned the holes out with a dremel. there was some rust in there, but i didn't take off much material. once the holes were cleaned up, the pin still required some work to drive into place.
