I have someone coming to look at my 4runner today, fingers crossed it might sell!

So my shopping for a replacement vehicle has taken on some urgency.

I'm pretty set on a NBS (2000-2006) Suburban or Yukon XL. I definitely want true 4wd with low range which means I'm not interested in a Denali XL, and honestly a 'Burb is probably more what I need.

This will be primarily a tow vehicle for our travel trailer and a winter/snow driver, with the possibility of some light off-roading (for those in Colorado, think Alpine Loop or Saints John, for those familiar with the Red Rock country of Utah, think White Rim trail.)

I know there's a FAQ but I wanted to solicit opinions/advice on whether I should be looking only at later models. My budget is around $10k max, but obviously if I can get below that significantly, that will allow me more $$ for things like tires, minor repairs, etc.

So my question here is, are there any advantages to staying with later models (say, 2003 and up) vs 2000 - 2002 models? Assuming the same miles (my arbitrary max is 150k) there is definitely a price advantage to going with an older truck, but I'm wondering if the later ones might have features that I would want?

Conversely, I know with some vehicles it may actually be more desirable to get an older model vs. a newer one just because sometimes manufacturers add high-tech gizmos that don't always work, and sometimes "older" can mean "simpler and less likely to break."

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Have you thought about the 2500 model? You could get the 6.0/8.1 for towing.

The 2003 year brought Stabilitrak and some upgraded interior bits.

Not really. My trailer is maybe 2000lbs max, a 1500 should pull it fine. I prefer the coil spring rear suspension setup on the 1500 vs the leafs on the 2500 as well and finally, most importantly, for every 2500 I see for sale there are at least a dozen 1500's and from what I've seen the 2500's go for a premium price, even with high miles (>200,000.)

If I was really being honest with myself, even a 1500 'Burb is overkill for what I need it to do. A 2500 would be OVER-overkill. :D

Stabili-trak is the traction control system, right?

04+ for sure

HydroBoost brakes for the win. Saftey this should be your biggest deal maker.

Ah, that's the kind of info I was looking for, thanks. According to Edmunds, TPMS became standard in '04 too?

Correct. I don't use mine. Have mine turned off. But the hydro bust is a no brainer in the safety and performance department.
