Originally i had a service 4wd light on and the car refused to shift into either 4hi or 4lo ( no lights on the selector ) pulled the codes and i got a c0327.

got a new encoder ring and rebuilt the motor. when i was installing the new motor it would not seat properly onto the transfer case spline shaft, i then decided i would try and get the system too think the transfer case was in neutral by hooking up the the motor on the wiring harness and shifting the motor using the 4x4 selector on the dash.

THIS DID NOT WORK! the motor was now in a spot that i don't believe is either one of the 4x4 options. by this point i had already manually shifted the transfer case into neutral from the spline shaft.

at this point i was going too give up for the day and because the transfer case was set too neutral i was going too drive the vehicle in the garage, i shifted into drive gave it gas and there was no movement. then shifted back too park when i heard grinding.transfer case.jpg trans motor.jpg

i need advice what i should do?
if there is any way too reset the shift motor too the neutral position?

[EDIT: i now know why there was grinding. im just an idiot]

You found out that the instructions were right -- don't actuate the encoder motor when it's off the transfer case. Water under the bridge.

You can carefully open up the encoder motor mechanism and move the gear back to the correct position, but I don't know if that will work for you. It did on one that I fixed. You've already had it somewhat apart to change the ring, right?

i did have it apart, but put the motor back together before i hooked it up to the wiring harness. how should i go about manually moving the gears?

I'm not sure if the encoder ring has to be set to neutral electronically, then the gears lined up, but see this vid:

He marked the relative position of his gears before he took it apart.

Grab the spline shaft and switch it to 2hi, should turn pretty easy.

Take the cover off, move the motor. There is a post here somewhere in the last few months about re-building /cleaning the motor and switches, has pics and good description.
