I have a 95 Chevy Tahoe. New crate motor 1.5 years ago. To the idle seems to be way too low. What is a good idle supposed to be at? Everytime I check the timing, it is dead on. When I am at a stop light waiting to go, the idle is at about 400 RPM'S when I am idling in park, it's about 800 or so. Thanks

My Tahoe, at just about 55 miles shy of 200k, idles warm just under the 500mark in D with AC on. If you put in in N, you will barely see any change, very smooth idle. This vehicle is all original and never tinkered with, just necessary maintenance. JMHO and good luck.

Sometimes the original tachs can be off and not read right due to different issues. You said you have a newer crate motor... is it a stock crate or upgraded? Any difference in the tuning or cam specs?

I am so sorry for not responding a lot sooner than now. i just looked at this thread again and saw this response. But yes, the crate motor is stock. Another thing I have noticed, is when I put it in drive shortly after starting it, the RPM'S are everywhere and just runs like crap. But as soon as I put in park or neutral the idle smooths out. Or when the RPM'S are everywhere, I just give it some gas and it goes away. Doesn't happen every start up either. And then when I am sitting at a stoplight, it seems like there is a miss every once in awhile, and smells like it's running rich after I shut it off. All this occurred after I just had my last issue fixed. My vehicle would randomly die as I was driving. No rhyme or reason to it. Finally got it diagnosed and fixed. It was a loose ignition wire that was connected to the ECM. Hasn't died since I got the wire fixed. But that's when the idle issue started. The plugs, wires, and distributor are all new, replaced with in the last 6 months. Thanks for taking the time to read and helping me out.

Has the vacuum been checked for stability and proper value in inHG? Many things affect vacuum, and there are several tests that can help indicate areas to diagnose.
