Update - car went in on Friday AM. around 3:30 I got a message saying that they were" unable to replicate the issue." Also, they found that prior to my ownership there were multiple codes thrown for "misfires" hmmmmm...

Unfortunately, they thought it was at start up. I indicated that there was a very rough start then I noticed the consistent tapping\ticking when warm. The last part did not make it to the tech.

Thankfully they gave me complimentary loaner car which I greatly appreciate and allowed me to keep it over the weekend.

Jennifer, thank you for your offer. I will PM you ASAP. As an aside, complimentary loaner cars, especially in situations like this, I.e. misunderstanding issue to be diagnosed, have the highest impact for me on customer satisfaction. Thanks for all you do for us!!

Another update:

Dealership called back today. The customer service rep said that the tech definitely caught it acting up this morning. She said that there is a GM bulletin out for it. This involves replacing the lifters and a few other items, $700 in labor alone. The parts are on the way.

Thankfully it is covered by the power train warranty. Overall I am thankful that it is covered by the warranty. However, at the same time a little disappointed that the venerable 5.3 is subject to an issue like this. I know every car has it's strengths and weaknesses. Thankfully GM sees this as an item in need of correction. Advice to other: do not take the "they all do that.." line while the car is still under warranty.

Should I reduce the 5K oil changes to 3K with syth? Wow. As an avid BITOG (bob is the oil guy) fan, I never thought I would be saying that...

Or are the replacement parts better? Any input is appreciated

Make sure the lifters didn't scuff up the cam......that's what mine did. They replaced the lifters and when i picked it up, the noise was still there cause the cam was fvcked.

Well it's definitely been over 5 years. Does that mean it's expired?


Yup... no dice. I checked my dealer and it's 5yrs or 100K whichever comes first. They also told me prior owner had the lifters, cam, piston rings, and what not done under warranty at 80K miles. I bought it with 90K. She's got 144K right now, when she's cold she's ticking like crazy.
