Some ticking in a GM is normal, but doesnt this sound a bit loud/excessive?

My '05 Denali just hit 100,00 miles. After the first cold front of the season in October, I noticed the slight engine ticking just for the first 20 seconds or so then would go away, no biggie, my old Tahoe did it, and my TBSS a tad.

Now it is doing it more-so when the engine is WARM, than a complete cold start in the mornings, and its louder than the previous tick. Actually it hardly does it in the mornings that much. Maybe 3 days of the week, and its a lot quieter than this clip....

The car had only been sitting for maybe an hour when I took this video, and the noise didn't start for atleast 45 seconds after I cranked it and let idle. It's didn't go away for 2 minutes.

I change my oil regularly and always keep this thing serviced.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here.. but the noise in the video doesn't seem like it's internal to your engine. It sounds louder than something that could be internal, and more latent. Going on that line of thought, it could be a motor mount, or your belt tensioner, or maybe a vibration at the mating of your engine and transmission.

The tensioner is the easiest of the three to check.. try putting more pressure on it with a ratchet while it's running, see what happens. If that doesn't resolve it, try driving your truck up on ramps and taking a good look at what's going on underneath.

Possible broken exhaust manifold bolts. Very common. Do a quick check...how many heads are missing? Sounds like exhaust to me...

I have heard some really loud lifters, but in this case I think it's more external. not a motor mount, but possibly exhaust manifold bolts or maybe a lose flex plate/convertor bolts.

Thanks for all your input, it turned out in fact to be the Manifold Bolt. Luckily, when the manifold was removed, there was just enough of the bolt sticking out for the mechanic to get his extractor-bit around it and back it out. He explained, had it broken flush with the head, I would have been in a world of hurt, mucho-$$$. He replaced the other bolts on the side, gasket, & pipe-flange gasket while he had it off.... As you can see in the photo where his extractor-bit secured to the broken bolt, I was damn lucky to have that much sticking out. He said its common with these because Gm tend to over-tighten these sometimes... (is that ********?)

I have been saving my money because everything was wearing out kinda all at once, ironically the odometer just hit 100,000. Rear rotor's/pads, oil change, transmission fluid/filter/gasket, plugs & wires. He said my power steering & brake fluid was a little dark so thats next when I have more money in January, & Since it's AWD I think it's time for front/Rear Diff fluid.

I had to go to Christian Bros Automotive, (yeah I know...WHY?!!)..... b/c unfortunately there arent many high-rated mechanics in my town, but what my friend forgot to mention was that they have high labor prices...

Thanks again guys, I love this Forum.

Good to know.....thanks for sharing the update/fix. Mine sounds like that once in awhile and I know I have at least one broken bolt(that i know of).....just waiting til spring cuz I may some mods getting done and will have it addressed at that time......

Mine had been pretty good to me and hit 100K in June and no big repairs yet except for the waterpump/thermostat that was done last week. Hopefully that trend continues...;)

Well Looks like I spoke too soon. Left side is noisy now.

After 1:00-1:30, idle with a warm engine.

Dammit.

***UPDATE/FIX*** Turned out to be Exhaust AGAIN!......a clogged converter! Thank the Lawd.

The following evening it was knocking so loud, like there was no oil in the car and I was trying to do a destruction experiment.

The following morning on the way back from my coffee run, the truck was obviously warmed up completely and it wouldnt go past 55mph but was not slipping out of gear, it was like someone was hitting the brakes while I was hitting the gas.

2 hours later it wouldnt go past 45. It shifted smoothly, it did not slip out of gear once, it was like taking off from a green light in 4TH gear, like someone was pressing the brake at the same time, so I figured, Transmission.

Dealership called and said "Tranny is fine, but that left side of your engine is misfiring 3,5,7 and throwing mass air flow error code"

(Plugs/plug wire were replaced the previous week so I knew that wasnt it)

"Take it to an exhaust shop, I'm 99.9% positive your left Catalytic Coverter is clogged.

Sure enough, the left converter was so bad that when they cut it off and shook it, it was all rattling and completely gunked/clogged, so I went ahead and had the right one replaced too, and it wasnt looking too pretty either...

The seller was the original owner, and elderly lady, so I know it was babied and never got past 50mph.... could that have cause the build-up so soon, not getting out on the highway and giving it some full-throttle?

Thanks
