Brakes didn't feel right even after putting in a new master cylinder and bleeding all 4 corners. Just not enough "bite".

Took one of the rear drums off to look at the adjusters...and everything is semi-coated in axle lube. Damned axle seal developed a leak. Pull the other side, it's dry but the hardware/adjusters are corroded pretty badly.

Ok, time to drain the diff, pull the axles and put in new seals. Measure the drums, they're out of spec, turned one time too many by the original owner. And the shoes are contaminated.

So by the time the dust settled I had new drums, new shoes, all new brake hardware including adjusters, a freshly cleaned and refilled diff......and a new diff cover! The original cover had a pin-hole from corrosion in it and was just starting to leak.

Now at least the truck feels like it has solid brakes with all new rotors/drums and shoes/pads, master cylinder, stainless lines and a good bleeding of the freshly filled system.

There goes my Federal tax refund!

I love my truck

Yeah, just keeping my sanity by saying I'm building a new 1999 model.

Damned near it seems as I look at my Excel spreadsheet of all maintenance and modification records I've kept since I bought it last Fall and charting every receipt the original owner provided me going back to delivery when it was brand new on August 12, 1999.

im using duralast rotors and pads for front, stock rear drums but changed the brake cylinders, pads and misc hardware .flushed the whole system with synthetic fluid and i can stop pretty good now. quick note to anybody who has changed there wheels or tires -get your ecm calibrated to the new wheel size other wise you will keep tripping the abs sensors

Put me in the "I'm building a new 1999 Hoe" camp too. At least by replacing everything with new stuff, you're limiting the variables of what could go wrong....
