I'm looking for some advice on the purchase of an extended warranty. I have a 2013 Tahoe LTZ with 31K miles. The factory warranty expires in February. I've owned the truck since new but have had several issues with it during the first 3 years of ownership. Does anyone have any recommendations on a good extended warranty? I don't like the idea of owning this vehicle without some type of warranty.

I personally don't like extended warranties but if you just have to have one then make sure it is not a no name brand that can fold up shop and leave you in the lurch. A GM extended warranty is where I would start my search and make sure you read for what is included and don't accept what the salesman is telling you. I believe that from day one a savings plan should be started and that money is set aside for when the factory warranty runs out and that is always more cost effective than an extended warranty. But that is my opinion and there will be someone here that will say I am full of shit. I have sold extended warranties and called in to them for coverage so I have been on both sides.

read the fine print on all of them, what's included, and where you can take it. I would heavily recommend that last part be "Any ASE certified mechanic" but most will want you to take it to specific shops

I would stick with a GM warranty. You'll have less problems and can take it to any GM dealership around the US.

What kind of issues have you had or concerned about ?

I bought the truck new. Within the first week I noticed that it had a rough idle. I've had it at several dealerships and each time I have a service technician sit in it. Each time they mention that the rough idle is excessive and beyond normal but never come up with a cause. At 5,000 miles I had to have the left front coil spring replaced (it failed). The blower fan has been replaced. The sunroof seal has been replaced after I had water leaking into the cabin. The left windshield makes a constant clicking noise that I can't reproduce at the dealership but have on video. The steering column just started making a whining noise while turning. I'm taking it into the dealership next week for that.

I've never really been a big fan of extended warranties but with this truck I feel like I need one.

My two cents I've always had an extended warranty I believe the factory warranty is the best option who better knows the vehicle except for you and I'm not a mechanic. I can see the point of not having one however with the electronics that is in the vehicles now if one of those was to fail you would have paid for the warranty at least that's my thought. My example I own a BMW after the factory expired I had an issue with the heater my cost nothing the warranty paid for it cost $2750 granted the warranty cost more but it also has paid for oil brakes wiper blades spark plugs and some minor issues. Long story short I have never regretted buying an extended warranty.

Sorry to hear. I can't blame you, if I had experienced some of the same issues as you I would also be looking to purchase an extended warranty. I guess you really have to look at what it will cost you, what is covered, and what your deductible would be in order to help determine the feasibility.

I'm not a fan of them. I bought my first one in almost 10 years on the Audi I purchased, only because I'm not familiar with them yet to work on it myself with confidence. It was a top tier warranty offered by the MB dealer where I purchased the car.

Last year I needed to use it. And while they did pay, they only paid about half of the repair bill and that was after both the dealership and I both called the warranty company and argued with them about an item called an oil valley gasket that the warranty company claims isn't covered by their "all engine seals and gaskets"

Before the warranty is up I will be taking it again because the suspension bushings are shot, another item the paperwork lists as a covered item. I fully expect them to attempt to weasel out of paying on that bill as well.

Prior to that I had another warranty on a Cadillac STS that barely paid for itself, again with a few trips to the dealership and arguments about what they covered.

On my current STS and Escalade I did not buy an extended warranty. I'd rather take the chance that I'll have to drop $5K on and engine or transmission myself than worry about what they'll want to pay for.
