I have been struggling with the speakers cutting in and out. I have checked all the wiring and disconnected various speakers looking for shorted wires but have not found anything wrong. Right now, I only have sound from the right front speaker and it cuts in and out - even when sitting in the driveway and not moving wires due to road irregularities.

This led me to believe the factory tuner is bad. I decided to pull it and I spent two hours getting the silver box above the gas pedal out. It didn't look right and the part number identifies it as the air bag control.

So I pulled the head unit out and I see it has no visible wiring issues. I notice the antenna wire goes into the back of the head unit. I always thought the antenna wire went to the tuner. Is it possible my Tahoe does not have a tuner and the head unit is doing the tuning as well?

Yes the tuner is built in as part of the whole stereo unit, though you may happen to have an extra amp installed. If so, it would be under the driver's seat.

I do have the amp under the drivers seat. So I take it that I need to replace the whole head unit and I will be okay?

Sounds like it. Even though the amp could have a problem, the head unit does the front speakers by itself. It does not use the external amp to power the fronts. When the external amp goes out it just knocks out the rear side doors.

I lost everything but the speakers at the barn doors so it looks like the head unit is gone. I have a Sony left over from my daughters car. I will try that next. I was going nuts look for the CDM and now I see why I couldn't find it. Thank you for setting me straight.

I meant to say everything but the right front door.

When you hook up the new unit hook up the pink wire from the chassis wiring to the old radio to the remote amp activation wire of the head unit.

Just wanted to say all 8 speakers are working with the replacement head unit and I owe it to this site. Thanks for the help. Dave
