Today I was able to fix the broken lift gate handle that popped out and was cockeyed when woman tried to open it yesterday. This resulted in the lift gate not opening. Luckily the glass still opened. So I took the interior trim panels out like so

And removed the handle. The split pins that keep the handle pivoting had pulled out, which then allowed the "shaft" to pop under the plastic piece that pulls the cable to open the hatch. Here you can see back of the handle and how it popped under that plastic piece.

The screw was left hand thread, so turn right to loosen, put it back properly with lever on top and spring and screw back down turning left. Then pried the right split back in and shoved the left split pin back in. Covered it all with silicon to hopefully keep the split pins from rattling out again.Forgot to take a pic of how it looks when the lever/shaft is in proper position sorry. Happy I didn't have to spend any money, the handle isn't too much but I'd have to get it painted unless junk yard would sell me just the handle and they had a white truck with it painted instead of black
