Fixed rear glass not opening on 2004 Suburban

After purchasing my 2004 Chevy Suburban I found out the rear glass hatch wouldn't open with the button. I took the rear trim piece off that surrounds the hatch. After looking at the opposite of the button I could see there was a shaft that came out that had a little lever on the end of it and that lever was no longer engaged with the latch. I found out if I can keep the small shaft with the lever on the end from coming out as far it would stay centered behind the button and release the latch. So i cut a piece from an old faucet supply line to make a spacer see photos. So far this is working. Sorry about 2nd post below was having trouble getting this online.

Idk exactly how the mechanism works but it looks like the black end to that bent rod should go into that notch in the silver wheel-shaped thing.

Here is some pictures to show what I did. The homemade spacer keeps the shaft from coming out to far which keeps the shaft centered in the push button release.
