For the past week my fuel gauge has been giving me some troubles. First thing I had noticed was that just after filling my truck up a couple miles down the road my fuel light came on and the gas gauge was on Empty. After a min or so it went back up to full...then later that day it dropped down to half a tank and a few mins later went back to full again.

This has happened just about every time I am driving, some times it will drop down to empty and some times it will only drop to half a tank. I have not noticed anything different going on with my truck that I can relate the issue to. Anyone have any experience with this issue.

Sounds like a sending unit going bad. Try adding a good fuel additive on your next full tank and drive a good 200 + miles to let it work in. It's possible you may have a lot of carbon build up on the sending unit contacts. If this doesn't work, your sending unit is probably bad. Good luck!

As deepseafish said, probably the sending unit. I think you have to drop the gas tank to gain access to the sending unit. Mine is doing the same thing for about a month now. Pretty pricey job( in Canada that is)

if you are going to drop the tank might as well replace the entire fuel pump.

an ac delco pump should be 250-300 and the job is something anybody willing to turn a wrench can do. itll prob take 4-6 hrs(6 if this is your first time doing a pump) so it can be done on a nice saturday or sunday. only thing that gave me a hard time with the job is the fuel lines on front side of the tank. they are simple connections, i just couldnt see them, had to reach back there and feel around alittle
