fuel spark and air are needed im not sure why you seem to be focused on fuel related problem. have you tried anything yet or are you just assuming its fuel related. easy test will it start with some help from starting fluid. if not your problem isnt fuel related. next you need to check to see if you have spark. you can either go buy a spark tester or just pull a spark plug leave it hooked up while someone tries to start it for you. if you dont see any spark or a poor looking spark your problem is further up. if you have no spark there check the condition of your distributor cap as the 5.7 is known to collect moisture in there and will ruin a cap quickly. if the cap is in good condition pull the wire off the distributor from the ignition coil and test for spark there. if theres no spark there your coil or the icm is bad. if it did start off starting fluid then yes a filter couldn't hurt if it hasn't been changed in a while. also just because you hear the pump doesn't mean its actually doing what its supposed to do.

I suspect that the problem will happen again. The fuel filter would have to be completely stopped up to restrict that fuel flow and keep from starting. In all my years of working on rigs I have never seen a completely clogged filter. Not saying it can't happen but I just feel the problem is still there. You never tested for what was missing when it did not start.

I also doubt it was the fuel filter, next time it happens have the icm tested, they can get intermittent but if it dies suddenly without any other problem just replace the icm

Yea, the ignition control module is a known weak spot and you can also have problems with the old distributor cap and rotor, especially with getting moisture in there. If you have some starting fluid or carb cleaner and it cranks but no start, try spraying some, in the throttle body, and see what happens.
