about 90 % of the time while shifting from 1st to second my truck shifts hard. not so hard you think somethings broken but hard enough to notice its not right. there is no pattern for when it does not do this. it has shifted the exact same way since i bought the truck over a year ago. ive been told it could be a sticking valve or spring but i dont know anything about transmissions.
any suggestions as to what it is?

Could be lots of things since you didnt own it from the start.
It may have a shift kit.
It may have a broken spring under the 1-2 accumulator.
It may have a blown hole where the ball seats at the plate between the valve body and case.

ETC.

Take it to a place you TRUST.

based on the previous owners and inconsistancy of it i am going to assume no on the shift kit.
ive heard of the other two options on being the problem

any idea on what it should cost.
i hear its not too costly

New separator plate is only like $20 BUT if that ball blew threw more then likely there is other damage...

so i realized today that if i am in 3, or 2 instead of drive. it shifts much smoother. not as smooth as the other gears do but a huge difference..

any ideas?

Yeah here's an idea, get it fixed before you break it completely. The difference between 3/2/1 and D is the overrun clutches are enabled. That should make no difference in shift quality.

My truck has done this since I got it, I lost 2nd and 4th gear going up a 7% grade a couple years back, but even after having the transmission rebuilt it has always had the problem of jerking between 1st and 2nd
