Longtubes and a good dual exhaust setup. cats are optional if you can get away with it. And then you will need a tune.
Won't I have to basically get the exhaust fitted to the longtubes??? I'm looking for least PITA install. I'm not too familiar with this platform so I was hoping for brands as far as ease of installation, if that's even applicable. I pretty much decided on shorties for that reason as I wasn't looking to redo the entire exhaust system. Thanks for the info though!!!

Don't waste your money on shorty headers, nothing to be gained. If you don't want to modify your exhaust for longtubes then leave it alone.

Door, not trying to hijack the thread, just thought I'd post here instead of a new thread.
What if one were to do the longtubes but NOT do the true dual exhaust? Waste of time/money?

Yeah.. I would just stick with the bolt on easy cat-back exhausts.
What are you trying to achieve by going with headers? Are you trying to open up exhaust flow, or are you just looking for a good sound, or .. ?
I think having a better understanding of what you are wanting to do might help determine best route to take.

I was hoping to free up open it up a little and help out that 5.3 and increase the sound factor at the same time. After reading the comments I'm going to check into pricing on doing the entire exhaust. Anyone have any suggestions on a good cat back to go with a set of long tubes and at that point would a Y or H pipe be need???

long tube pace setters got a decent set im putting them on my 02 tahoe longtubes mine were 266 on amazon and you need the offroad y for 140 with out cats or if you wanna keep cats pace setter has a y with cats and the factory exhaust will bolt on to that pace setter y or right up to an after market setup go exhuast sells the pace setters i usually go with amazon because shippings free for me
