Can someone please give me some help here. My sister sent me this picture and asked if she should contact the dealership. Obviously she should. This appears to be the transmission or transfer case. I am not familiar enough with the vehicle. It is a 2017 Tahoe. SLE I believe. What am I looking at? Anyone see something similar? Is it missing a cover?

Shouldn't hurt anything other than the opening allowing dirt and debris in. As far as the broken part, I'd have it checked to see if there is no other cracks. If not, then a new cover and some JB weld should fix it up to keep debris out.

That entire piece is called the bellhousing. There's supposed to be an aluminum cover like that smaller one further back. My concern is how that happened and a crack spreading from that missing chunk.

Back to the dealer. I'm willing to bet it lost a bolt in the converter and slung it thru the bellhousing. It's not worth the risk and the inspection cover is missing..not good either way.

^^^Thats a good possibility since that's an odd place to get hit unless a big rock or something flew up there and hit it. I would definitely have the flexplate and torque converter checked for missing bolts.

If she bought it new or under warranty take it back to the stealership, make them fix it right and stand good on the warranty.

How is it that your sister discovered this? The edge of the damage is quite fresh and clean so it was discovered right after happening. Did she hear it happen and investigate? If so, maybe she needs to recall the road on which she was riding. Rough road? Construction? Debris on road?

Since there is no evidence of external impact this should be a warranty repair but as it is damage, your sister should expect a battle. No dealership will want to go to bat for them with GM. If it turns out the damage is attributed to a missing bolt(s) on the flex plate they won't fight but there is always the possibility that there was a foreign object inside the bell housing (say an errantly dropped bolt at assembly?) that was never noticed (or reported). The proof will be in evidence of impact and / or damage from said internal foreign item.

In all cases, I wish her good luck. Please keep us posted.

I wonder what the dealership is going to do... I believe that it should be covered since its could be a defect on the material. But now a days its questionable. I would like to know the updates and what the dealership will do. thank you
