HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A family says they captured thieves on camera stealing the tires off their car right in their driveway in northwest Harris County.

The couple wants to warn others about their $4,000 loss. They have a play-by-play look at how it all happened and they're hoping someone will recognize them.

It was not the way the Drapers planned on spending their weekend.

"We thought we took every step possible to try and prevent it," victim Missy Draper said.

While they were asleep in the early morning hours Saturday, wheel locks and a security camera weren't enough to stop thieves in their driveway.

"Couldn't believe that this happened to us," Draper said.

But they weren't speedy on the job.

"Come to find out, they were here for about 40 to 45 minutes," Draper said.

And a close call almost stopped the operations all together, when the back of the Tahoe tilted and almost fall on one of the thieves.

"It was also a reminder to us that something really bad could happen to these guys. They continue to do this to other vehicles and eventually they could get hurt, and it could lead to a homeowner taking action and they could end up losing their life," Draper said.

The Drapers said they've put the video immediately on their community's public Facebook page, which includes 1,600 members of their HOA.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Harris County Pct. 4 Constable's Office.

One suggestion: GARAGE IT!

The world would be better off with lowlifes like that face-down in a ditch somewhere.

I actually had my truck garaged whenever someone stripped the stereo out of it. My genius roommate left his truck unlocked outside - with the garage door opener in it!

Just goes to show you that alarm systems, wheel locks, no matter what it is you have... If someone wants something bad enough, they'll get it.

Everytime I read one of these makes me glad I do not live in a big city.

It was a little bit of a hassle, as I used my own wrecker, not their recommended one, and I purchased my replacement wheels before they wrote the initial estimate (I wanted to get rolling ASAP as I know how long the process of them writing the estimates can take). All in all it took 3 week to get reimbursed from Allstate. They weren't too bad to work with.

When I had a theft 5 years ago, and had State Farm, they took care of everything within days. So much better to work with.

That sucks, I was going to get rid of my locking lugs but now it sounds like a bad idea.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I live 30 min north east of houston. Own a NNBS yukon and sierra. It has happened out here to someone I personally know. So far we have been lucky. But it seems wheel locks don't stop thieves, so are they even worth the money?

They detour the idiot thieves but if you have autozone locks a thieve can also just go to autozone and buy a set and use the key.. You could buy boots and boot all 4 wheels but they are expensive..
