I plan on painting my rims tomorrow since I love how everyone elses looks.

I have primer and black gloss. Do I need to sand the rim or just paint?

THANKYOU!!!

Just with anything else, prep work is key. I would sand your rim down, make sure you do it evenly, 300 grit should work fine. Then I would go ahead and make sure they are completely clean and dry. I wouldn't worry about the primer, just paint then clear coat.

Thanks. I know it's not necessary to sand the center cap because it's plastic. But the steel MUST be sanded? I thought the paint would only come off if chrome wasn't sanded. Here's a pic of my wheels.

(don't know how to post them here, so they're on photobucket)

Sanding them will remove the gloss on the wheels. Many people use different techniques...some just clean the wheels then spray them...others sandblast, prime, paint and clear coat. It depends on how much time you are willing to spend on doing it.

paint doesn't like to stick to a real smooth surface no matter what it is. sand it all, paint and clear coat it.

wet sand it with 400 grit paper to keep the paper from loading up.

gotta sand the center caps they are aluminum platted, not plastic. and the rims are not steel either. sand everything with 150-200 then go back with a 400-600 wet sand smooth, light prime, paint, clear coat. they will last forever. (make sure you clean well before painting)
