I have a leak :(

Hi Folks
newbie here from Canada

I have a 2000 tahoe 5.3 4x4 and it developed a leak ,on my in-laws drive as well .

I had a quick look underneath (very quick its was -25c) and it looks like it coming down the filter and then spreading outwards. I dont have access to ramps as the family mechanic is away on holiday but the filter seemed quite tight .
The top of the motor is clean and the levels are ok, i thought it was the transmission as we have been using the 4x4 with the snow etc . Its dark brown oil.

if any of the more mechanically minded could give me any areas where i could check to see whats leaking it would be great.

You need to inspect further man.

Chances are its not the filer. Not that thats impossible but its likely something else.

I know its cold but you need to get under there with a light and look way up there to see just how high the oil is. You can than rule out anything below the approximate point of origin.

I'm going to assume it is the oil pressure sensor. You say its a slow leak? You say your levels are good? My truck has a slow leak which doesnt even drip off the truck and I have determined that it is the oil pressure sensor. This sensor measures engine oil pressure and that is where the gauge on the instrument cluster gets its reading from. I think the o-ring or something breaks down. If you climb up on the engine and reach way back to the back of the block...sticking your hand down there you should be able to get some oil slipping down the back. You can see the electrical connector for the sensor, the sensor threads in to the top of the block at the very back.

I mean it could be a few other things, however I think that is probably the more common point of origin. You dont need to be a genius to track down a leak, you just need time and patience. Freezing temps dont help though I know! Whens the next oil change? You can get under there than maybe?
