I think the dealership destroyed my engine

My 2022 Yukon Denali went into the dealership on Thursday for its first oil change and recall repairs. It was done All in the same day.
On the way home my husband was on the freeway and the car completely shut off, a warning popped up on the screen saying the car could not be in drive, and the car just coasted. It would not turn back on. My husband luckily made it safely to the side of the freeway where he called the dealership to ask what the heck did they do the car. It’s a brand new car that worked perfectly until they touched it. They said it wouldn’t be anything that they did. It got towed back to the dealership. Long story short…
They called us the next morning and said the engine seized and it needs a whole new engine.
What does this sound like happened to you guys? Also what would you do?
We are already speaking to GMC about the buyback program

Did they refill the oil? If the engine sized right after an oil change I would suspect that they did not put oil back in. Mistakes happen and you'll have a new engine, not like it is going to make the vehicle any different. Ask for extended warranty as possible compensation for the inconvenience.

One of my high school teachers told us a story about how the local Toyota dealer did the same to his Highlander.

Welcome to the forum.

Like @slupie suggested, get an extended warranty for free from them for your trouble. They better have given you a loaner of equal size. Yes, likely did not do oil change right. Maybe left oil filter loose or did not check for the old filter seal being stuck to engine and spun on the new filter over it and while driving, puked oil out. Tell hubby to learn the correct oil change methods and do it himself. Most of us do that and there are horror stories out there about oil changes done by dealers, shops and oil change shops. Like one member said, "Don't want my oil change done by someone out on work release".

It seems crazy that they wouldn't put oil back in it but I guess you never know. When I do oil changes on my vehicles I feel like I check the dipstick about 14 times before I'm satisfied to call the job done. I always assume the oil change guy at the dealership is the low man on the totem pole, the newbie, the lowest paid tech so that's who you've got "working" on your vehicle. And in todays working world, that guy probably sucks but they can't find anybody else.

Thanks for all the replies and great advice. We think they didn’t put oil in as well. I’m worried a new engine will affect the value of the car down the road. Is that a thing? Also- the dealership is telling us that 2022’s have known engine problems and it is not their fault. So we are in a standstill right now

You aren’t at a standstill. It’s under warranty, regardless of “who” or “how” you are getting a new engine. Aside from the inconvenience, you are going to be made whole, right? It’s sucks it happened, but you can’t really change it, best to just move forward. As for affecting the vehicle value; probably not. The dealer is right, there have been reported engine issues; so a replaced engine on the car fax won’t be abnormal.

I certainly wouldn't argue with them as to who is at fault. These new rigs have issues and dealer techs make mistakes so who knows which one of these bit you. Either way you'll get a new engine at no cost out of pocket. If you're going with the buyback route I doubt you'll gain much traction from GM and you'll probably just irritate the dealership that you're then relying on to replace your engine. Might just find yourself at the bottom of the to-do list going that route.

It won't affect the value, a great many of these new trucks have had engine work already because of faulty lifters in the engine. It's under warranty so you're only worry should be what time to pick up the rental car on their dime.
