intermediate steering shaft help

Hi all,

So you may have read my previous troubles with my newly acquired z71 Tahoe. I thought that the suspension needed to be refreshed, my buddy told me it was fine, and was the steering shaft. Question is, can one only replace the intermediate shaft, or is there more knuckles that can be replaced?

It makes low groining/clunky noises when starting to turn, both left and right.

We shook the wheels back and fourth with the steering wheel, he said rack looked okay, same with the ball joints. any thoughts?

Have you tried exercised the ISS first? It's quick and free and it got rid of my clunk completely. Also, there is a bearing up behind the steering wheel that goes bad, maybe contributing.

You can replace both upper and lower ISS's.

Hoe long did this repair last? did it fix the problem, or jist a bandaid?

It redistributes the grease that had settled which is the typical cause of the infamous clunk while turning at low speeds. I have seen different reports on how long it lasts. Most seem to say up to a year. I just did it a week ago (not even), but my clunk is totally gone. One other piece of info.... I have read that if you do the upper bearing behind the wheel, get the Delco one as the Dorman doesn't last.

Yeah, I actually broke the POS dorman attempting to install it. Got a GM one off ebay. 88963617

"Exercised" mine Sat. and, despite all the testimonials, I was still surprised how easy it was and that it worked.
