So I just picked up a 2002 tahoe lt 4x4 with 172k on it. Over all I'm happy with it and got what I think was a good deal. But it does need some attention, which luckily I can handle myself. However I've been out of the game for about 5 or 6 years and while mechanically I can still work on stuff just fine, my diagnosis skills have gone to shit. So maybe yall can help.

1. Dash problems. Radio, hvac and cluster backing lights are out. The radio and hvac function fine, just no lights. The cluster still shows the odometer and PRND321, the info display functions, turn signal lights, etc all work. But no back light. Also, I'm getting a check oil level warning, but it's full.

2. Steering. Odd clunk when turning the wheel to full lock in either direction. Should be easy to diag, but maybe you guys know something common causing this?

3. ABS/BRAKES. the abs light and parking brake light are both on. The fluid is full and brake is off. Is there a common issue to cause this?

4. 4x4. Seller stated that the truck gets stuck in 4x4 and has a hard time transitioning from 4x4 to 2x4. I'm assuming this is my biggest concern and with it being a push button 4wd set up I'm not sure where to start. Is there something common that happens here?

Over all its a clean truck with what is hopefully not a huge set of issues. I do have a scan tool (basic Mac one) that I'll have in a few days, but so far no diag work has been done. Can you guys point me in a decent direction with some of these?

1 - if there is zero lights, check a fuse. if some are there but theyre just burnt out - they do make LED replacements that are easy to do.

2 - Intermediate steering shaft

3 - Possible bad VSS wire on one of the hubs

4 - may be the push button itself.

lights out on cluster are bulbs you can replace the radio and ac control you have to soder new ones in
the steering wheel sounds like maybe ball joints
and the abs could be the sensors on the wheel hubs i had to just change both hubs since it was all one part
and lastly the 4x4 sounds like bad front diff check fluid in front diff and transfer case its common for them to go dry and go bad

Awesome. I'll look into all of this. The dash light thing I'm still a little unsure on. With the truck off the radio screen lights up fine but with the truck on it goes out. I'm not sure about the rest yet because it's still light out but I'll have to take a look tonight

I'm not trying to be a smart aleck, but is the brightness dial turned up on the left side of the steering wheel?

Yes the brightness is turned up. With the headlights off during the day I can see the radio display fine, but with the lights on and at night I cannot. That leads me to believe it's the headlight/dimmer switch

I don't mind doing the work or grabbing the part. Im hoping it'll be throwing an abs code that narrows it down though

My guesses
1: mine was dimmer switch
2:mine was inter-steering shaft (get the new model)
3: my abs was the module on top of pump common problem but get it scanned first
4: actuator easy repair part is on transfer case
