I am running a K&N CAI on a 1998 hoe and keep running into MAF faults. Seems the issue is around the oil on the filter collecting on the MAF. Assuming this is a known issue, and wondering how others have addressed it?

Thanks,

I've had a k&N CAI on my truck for 2 years and never had the MAF problem you are describing, when oiling the filter just oil enough to have a bit of a pink/red color even over the filter, basically lightly oil it!! Also pick yourself up some MAF specific spray cleaner for your MAF, spray it all out pretty good, don't touch the little wires in the MAF and DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR AT ALL, just let it air dry!!

Thank you. That is reassuring. I can't remember if I even oiled the filter after last cleaning. I will be cleaning it this weekend, along with the MAF; once I get the cleaning spray.

Will followup next week as to the success.

+1

big problem with VW people,
most people put too much oil on the filter after they clean it.

too much oil will spray the maf and burn it out.

FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS IN THE K&N RECHARGER KIT !!!
let the filter sit (preferably overnight) after re-oiling the filter.

Cleaning the MAF corrected the problem. Cleaned the filter and went much lighter on the oil this time.

I hear folks on different forums complaining all the time about K&N air filters giving their MAF's a code. I've had one on my 4Runner for about 6 years now and NEVER had a code. I just clean it when it gets dirty, oil it, let it dry for about 6 hours and put it back on.
