First off, welcome to the forum from Iowa.
As for your issue:
1). You’re sure you have gas in the tank? Seems basic and not trying to be rude, but I gotta ask.
2). Any other recent issues with the vehicle prior to this happening? And check engine lights or other lights on the dash?
3). Have you put a pressure gauge on the fuel line to see what the fuel pressure is?
4). Since it’s turning over, I’m guessing you have a good battery. Have you confirmed that you have spark at the spark plugs?

I had kind of a similar issue--turned out to be a clogged fuel filter. Sediment would move just enough going up hill to clog the fuel line, causing it to stall immediately, and crank and crank. Fixed once the fuel filter was changed.

Like has been said already, need to do the basics first. get a fuel pressure reading and check for spark and check for codes. Please also share what vehicle it is.

Get it running yet? If it was low on fuel when going up steep hill...try hitting bottom of fuel tank with a rubber mallet. Old school fix. Could have picked up some sediment in fuel pump. My brother pushed his luck with the fuel gage on the interstate and ran out of gas. Took him 5 gallons of gas but still crank/no start. Got out the mallet and after a few good whacks it fired up and has been fine since.

That reminds me of another tip that someone told me years ago about the fuel system on these trucks. Try to always fill back up before getting below 1/4 tank. I can't remember the specifics on it but your reply seems to tie into that reasoning.
I always recommend that you think of 1/4 tank as empty and to refuel before getting there. The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel around it. The lower below 1/4 tank that the level gets the more chance of the pump running when not completely immersed in fuel when turning or steeps hills. I believe, and don't know when the design changed, GM has now surrounded the pump with a kind of container that holds fuel around the pump even when lower on fuel but I still stick with what I said.
