I have a 98 2 door tahoe with the push button 4wd. The rear output seal on the transfer case (drive shaft to rear axle) has been leaking for a while now. Recently it seems to be getting worse. I had the seal changed three times over the last couple of years. The first time the transmission shop used the cheapo ten dollar seal. Most recently, about a year ago I had a shop put a seal on it from Oreilly's. I think it was about $30 to $35 and is much more robust than the first one. It's still leaking. I also think the shop just put Dex 3 ATF fluid in the case as the leaking fluid is red. The truck has 235K miles on it. Other than the leak, the transfer case works perfectly. My question is would the GM seal work better than what I have and could using the correct fluid in the case (the blue stuff, I think) make a difference. Is there another internal seal or bearing going bad that could be causing the leak. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Moved to the correct section,

First of all if you have a 98 and push button do you have a "Auto 4wd " selection on the switch panel? If so They are not using the correct Fluid if you have a Autotrac Transfercase NP246 It requires AutotracII fluid blue in color.

Just a FYI ^^^

I have had this issue as well over the past few years, I finally seem to have found the fix , I went to the dealership and had them put one in . soooo yea Haven't had any issues since :jester:

Dont think the tranny fluid level is low or going down. I checked it before a 1000 mile trip this past January and it was fine. I'll check it again this weekend.

A year ago I had a new/rebuilt tranny installed. At the same time the shop serviced the transfer case by replacing the rear seal and changing the fluid. I told them about the blue fluid but now its obvious I have red fluid, I'm assuming regular ATF fluid.

As a side note, I had all my fluids changed probably four years ago, both axels, transmission and transfer case. The transmission shop installed two of those 10 dollar, cheapo real seals. Ever since then there's been a very slight leak of red fluid from the transfer case. Its amazing the case has made it this long!

Thanks for the help guys!

unknown at this time.
just checking there is a seal between the tranny and tcase that if it goes bad, it can leak tranny red fluid into the tcase and overflow it pushing out the old stuff.

Thanks for the info. Will check out that area good this weekend. Hopefully that seal was changed or at least inspected a year ago when I had the tranny replaced.

Ya....well something tells me I'll be doing a Tranny/Xfer case seal pretty soon.... Just replaced rear output seal .... it was leaking RED transmission fluid.... R&R'd the seal, went to replace the fluid and pulled the upper plug... tranny fluid gushed out. Can I just drop the Xfer case to change the seal or would it be easier to drop the Trans/Xfer case together?
