Lighting Issues

Sorry if this is in the wrong section. I couldn’t find anything specific to “lighting”. I recently replaced all of my front light assemblies along with putting in new LED headlights and fog lights. During this process I noticed the two inner lights just below the headlights that never seemed to come on. A quick google search helped me identify these as the daytime running lights. The bulbs were obviously about as old as the truck (2002), so I decided to start there. I installed the new bulbs today and still nothing. I found the DRL fuse and it’s fine. Any suggestions on getting these going again?

Also, I noticed a slight hiccup today with the amber bulbs next to the DRLs. These are the front turn signals and they both flash when the Blinkers/Flashers are turned on. The right side stays on with the headlights when not flashing (running lights also?), however the left side does not. Not a huge deal operationally speaking. But I’m a bit OCD and after spending the $ and time to get the lighting all pretty on the front, it’s killing me that everything is not working 100%. Any thoughts on either of these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Drl lights come on when put in drive. U can test them if you hit the unlock button on key fob, should come on for a few seconds and go off. On the turn signals they should be dual filament, maybe one is blown on left side.

Thanks for the info. Very helpful. I’m gonna go out and check the DRLs now. There was water getting into that left assembly before I replaced it so the bulb could be bad. I had no clue about any dual filament situation. Lol

You can also turn on the DRL’s by turning the key to on without starting the engine, and shifting into drive. Set the parking brake first or at least be on level ground, make sure it doesn’t roll before you get out to check the lights.
This only works in daylight, if it’s dark they won’t come on.

Just had my son crank the truck and put it in drive. Nothing on the DRLs. The headlights come on automatically but not these smaller bulbs. If it’s dark enough for the actual headlights to kick on do these shut off automatically? Also I did put LED bulbs in the DRL slots but I can’t imagine that would cause any problems.

Yes if your auto headlights come on, the drl lights shut off at the same time. There’s an ambient light sensor on top of your dash in the middle near the windshield, looks like a little dome. Cover that and your headlights should turn off and the drl will work then. And remember leds have polarity so you might have to turn them 180* in the socket. I suggest getting the drl working with a regular bulb, then when you know the circuit has power plug in the led and if it doesn’t work pull it out and reverse it.

And you don’t need to crank the truck, just turn the key to the on position. Not the accessory position, but to the point where your gauges turn on. Just don’t need to actually start the truck. That way one person can do it.

There’s an ambient light sensor on top of your dash in the middle near the windshield, looks like a little dome. Cover that and your headlights should turn off and the drl will work then.

The auto headlights work just the opposite. If you cover the sensor it will think it's dark and the auto headlights will come on. To check the DRLs, work in daylight conditions and make sure the sensor isn't covered.

Do the key on, in drive, with the parking brake set like Mark said. The DRL bulbs are dual filament but only one of them works, and incandescent bulbs can be inserted either way. Doesn't matter. The sockets do overheat and deform, though. You'll probably see them turning brown.

Doh. I knew that! You can put a bright light up there instead to simulate daylight.
