Limited slip production code for a 20 Tahoe suburban?

The production code on a 21 g86.

is that the same as a 20?

the 20 is described as heavy duty automatic limited slip differential

the 21 is simply described as limited slip mechanical

on my 19 and prior I could go through some serious snow and through some good mud and dirt with those trucks.
I’m getting the feeling the 21 plus aren’t going to go as well

I just saw something about a ‘21 z71 that didn’t have limited slip anything... freaking thing couldn’t climb over a pebble...


I saw that video too. That’s what prompted the questions. the specs for the trucks say they have limited slip diffs as standard equipment.

Well, a true limited slip works differently than the truck G80 locker that we're all used to. That Z71 in the TFL Truck video looked to me like it had open diffs, maybe it was a pre-production truck? We all saw those things climb straight up some obstacles when GMC revealed theirs so I reckon we need more information and time to learn about these.

The GM Order Guide for 2021 shows a limited slip differential as standard across the entire Suburban range, including the Z71.

The limited slip in the 21’s are rpo code g86 which is described as mechanical limited slip differential

the g80’s are described as heavy duty limited slip differentials

I guess it could be a preproduction model as the son said there were only 4 in the world and I doubt any dealer would let some you tube influencer take such a hot commodity out for a run on dirt road.
This one item is hanging me up from committing to one. I don’t go rock climbing but I do drive in some deep snow and traverse the occasional muddy field now and then

The RPO code for 2020 was G80, I think the switch from solid rear axle to IRS changed some things.

I’m wondering how much. I’m wondering if it’s that big of a deal and can I exchange the factory g86 to the g80?

it looks like the only axle ratio offered in any configuration is 3.23

doubtful as you would be going to a entire new rear end setup and im willing to be the new ones are a bit smaller than the solid rears were. Possibly not though. Other than limited slip or not I would be worried as well about the half shafts/CVs and their strength when wheeling or even just getting around in rough conditions. I would think lots of locking/unlocking would wear them quickly. Also doubting their strength as well because stock C8s have been breaking theirs and I doubt the SUV lineup will have stronger ones. And while the SUVs will lack the power a C8 has the stress of wheeling or just getting around in something rough may go poorly.

All speculation on my end though.
