Hello all,

I have a 96 Tahoe 5.7L. for the past week i've been having this loud flutter sound. Seems metal to metal-ish but reminds me of a playing card in a bike wheel. It only occurs on an acceleration from 0-20 mph before i hit 1500 rpms. It doesnt occur after that when i hit the throttle or when cruising. The only thing i recall doing in the past week that could have effected this was putting some zip ties on the end of the shift cable that connects to the trans pan since it popped off. The exhaust gaskets are new, spark plugs are tight. Thank you

The video is below, the sound occurs immediately at 3-5 second mark

Like you said it sounds like something is rubbing metal to metal... perhaps a heat shield? The "metal flutter" doesn't sound like an exhaust leak (since you referenced exhaust gaskets) or arcing (since you referenced spark plugs). However, there does seem to be something going on that could be exhaust as well (deeper sound than the metal rubbing)...

Before I say anything, let me ask you this. Have you recently either A. Replaced or rebuilt the transmission, or B. Hit the bottom of the vehicle ******* something? The reason I ask, is because I rebuilt the trans on my Tahoe about 5 months ago, and when I stabbed in back in, I cracked my flex plate, and it made a sound very similar to what I heard. I hope that's not it, but it's a relatively cheap fix if it is, if you can do it yourself. A flexplate sells about 100 to 150 and it's a simple drop of the trans and bolting the flexplate in.

thats hard to diagnose from a video , definitely check your wheels/tires / rotors , axles, drive line/u joints . if you dont see anything worn or hanging off , then i'd look into the trans or flex plate like mentioned above .

I had a sound similar to that, it was my catalytic converter. The insides went to shit, so if i had enough pressure from the exhaist, it would keep itself seated, to little pressure and it would rattle like hell. May or may not be your issue, but its work a check.
