Maybe some one can shed some light... this morning I started the truck a 97 kon 2dr 4wd and I heard a loud ticking/banging, metal to metal, dry sound comming from what it apperars to be the oil pan. everything seems to be in order with the exception of that.. any idea what it could be, currently brainstorming all the possiblilities before i dig in, also want to do the easy ones first...Thanks.

Did you have oil pressure register with this noise going on. It could be an broken oil pump or a damaged crank or rod bearing.

hey what does it mean when your oil pressure goes down to about 60 while in idle but goes up once you raise the rpms? is that normal? i have a high performance oil pump so usually my oil pressure is at about 80.

That is just your oil pressure changing with pump speed. No harm You probably actually have a high volume pump and with new tight bearing clearances you pressure will be higher than before. when engine oil is hot it will drop a little. Mine stays above 50 when idling cold and just below 40 when hot and I have 236,000 miles on it. FYI minimum hot rating are below with a stock oil pump.

OIL PRESSURE
Minimum Hot:

1000 rpm 41.4 kPa (6.0 psi)
2000 rpm 124.1 kPa (18.0 psi)
4000 rpm 165.4 kPa (24.0 psi)

So as long as you have no clogged lines you should not have to worry.

Everythng looks normal, all gages are reading as normal. Nothing out of the ordinary aside from the ticking pretty loud i might add. Already checked the starter, converter, flywheel all looks tight inderneath. Ticking disipates as rpm increses.

if nothing else is amiss then I would look for a loose torque converter bolt(you did check them you said or just look at the converter?)if it dies down with rpm increase. if the oil pressure has been lower lately since it started then a spun crank bearing. if the sound goes away when you pull off a spark wire from a cylinder then it is the rod bearing for that cylinder.

Woooo! I had 2 back out last time I did a verter swap. Like a idiot I didnt torque them properly.

Let me tell ya this, a looser converter bolt makes ONE HELL OF A NOISE! when it starts bangin into the back of your block!
My passenger damn near went out the window when the first one let go at 60mph under full throttle. :laughing1:

Visually looked and nothing seems loose... Probably a dumb question that I can guess the answer.. tranny needs to come down to look at the converter bolts? Gonna take the oil pan out to see if I have anything in there....
