Hey I just recently purchased a 167,000 mile 2004 4x4 Tahoe LT 5.3l and am extremely excited. I am coming out of a 2008 Altima 3.5l but needed more room and the 4wd.
Now I used to own a 2000 5.3l short wide bed sierra that I had did exhaust/optional cut out/cai/under drive pulley, notune, 18s that got 18 avg everywhere and would push 20mpg hwy, all at 200,000+ miles.
Here is the issue when I got the tahoe I would get right under 16 with mostly Hwy and some city(city for me is a 10000 person town, not dallas or anything). I expected around the same, it is heavier etc. I put a new K&N filter in it, corvette servo, electric fans, larger alternator due to fans, new plugs and wires, new brakes(they dont help mpg due but i put them on lol), and I got a BBP tune 93, we did the scan cable tune. After two full tanks of 93 and 600 miles I got 15mpg on what I normally would get 16, doing actually more highway, and 15.7 pure no traffic crusing 70 hwy (dont have a relative toward that) and no I was no harping on the gas cause of the new tune, my two dogs would not like that
I am in email talks with Justin. I am considering my vehicle even with the higher octane tune is not liking the 93. And I just bought a Airaid Modular Intake Kit, just the tubing from MAS to TB after i saw the results being just as good as all other CAI to see if a airflow problem is causing this.
I do not have aftermarket exhaust, didnt know if that was a issue, I like the stock sound. Recommendations to aftermarket exhaust for stock sound are welcome!
I know several are going to say its just heavier, older etc but my parents had a 2004 LT Tahoe 5.3l 2wd that would do 22hwy no modifications. They had bought it new and I drove it roadtrips before they sold it and it seriously did do that well. I understand mine isheavier but not that much ha.
I am planning on driving this vehicle till its gone, or I can hand it down to my son and have already slowly starting planning a newer engine swap into it once it gets issues or near 250k
I am just looking for reasons for the such low mpg and suggestions!
