material in fender/door jam

Hello - This question is in relation to a 2011 Yukon XL 2500; but I am sure it applies to all of these body styles. I bought the truck used so it is new to me.

When I open the front doors I notice there is a piece of felt looking material (about 1/4" think, grey, sound deadening?). It looks to be form fitting to the area, but it's odd to me it is exposed and actually gets wet while driving if conditions are rainy or snowy.

Is this normal? Should it be elsewhere?

Ah I know what it is. Nothing to worry about. Its a closeout panel. Disregard my response to your other post. Most all passenger vehicles have them.

Sorry to have 2 posts going on same topic - but what is a closeout panel? Why is it a substance that is going to retain moisture?

It just acts as a blockoff for finishing purposes. Makes it look nice, basically.

Yep. Keeps debris from the wheelhouse out of the cabin / pillar area. Most vehicles are of a jute material which does keep moisture, not sure why its that material. Some use just a plastic.
